Road and foundation base quality control

Soil and aggregate base testing

Field and laboratory assessment of compaction, deformation response and bearing performance of prepared bases.

  • Evddynamic deformation modulus from LWD testing

Field and laboratory quality control of soil, crushed-aggregate and graded aggregate-sand bases to assess compaction, deformation response and bearing performance before road surfacing or foundation construction.

When testing is required

After placing or compacting a base in layers, before accepting a structural layer, installing road surfacing or foundations, and when verifying compliance with project requirements.

What the testing provides

  • Measured performance

Density, compaction and deformation-response measurements at agreed control locations.

  • Distinct methods

Ev1 and Ev2 are obtained by static plate testing, while Evd is obtained dynamically; the results are not interchangeable.

  • Evidence for the next stage

Technical data to assess base readiness or identify the need for corrective work.

How the work proceeds

  1. 01

    Brief review

We confirm the base build-up, materials, project criteria, construction stage and purpose of testing.

  2. 02

    Test programme

We define the methods, control locations, number of measurements and assessment criteria.

  3. 03

    Location preparation

We check access, surface condition and level at each test location and record the test conditions.

  4. 04

    Field testing

We carry out the agreed density measurements and separate static or dynamic plate load tests.

  5. 05

    Laboratory assessment

Where required, we assess sampled mixtures and process the field results.

  6. 06

    Record and findings

We compile the results, compare them with the specified criteria and issue the technical document.

Service scope

  • Compaction coefficient determinationWe measure achieved soil density on site and compare the result with the agreed requirements.
  • Static plate load testingWe determine deformation moduli Ev1 and Ev2 through successive static loading cycles using the applicable procedure.
  • Dynamic plate load testingWe perform rapid dynamic-load control and determine the dynamic deformation modulus Evd.
  • Graded aggregate mixture controlWe assess particle-size distribution, moisture content and other agreed material characteristics.
  • Bearing-performance assessmentWe check prepared bases and pavement structural layers against project requirements within the scope of the selected methods.
  • Test documentationWe prepare measurement records and technical findings in line with the applicable DBN and DSTU requirements and the agreed brief.

What the client receives

a plan or schedule of control locations and recorded test conditions · density and compaction coefficient results · separate Ev1 and Ev2 static-test results and Evd dynamic-test results · results of the agreed graded aggregate mixture assessment · a test record and technical findings against the specified requirements

What we need from you

  • project criteria for the base and structural layers
  • details of the material, construction method and compaction stage
  • a site plan and access to the control locations
  • a responsible site contact

What to consider

the method and number of control locations depend on the brief, material and base construction · Ev1 and Ev2 belong to the static method, while Evd belongs to the dynamic method; direct equivalence is inappropriate · results describe the base at the tested locations and at the time of testing · the findings do not replace design decisions and are not an absolute guarantee of future structural behaviour

Need to confirm that the base is ready?
